Wrexham AFC's aspirations for an exciting 2026/27 season took a hit this week as they received a fine from the EFL over player eligibility violations. After a disappointing start, the club's challenges have multiplied on and off the pitch.

Rocky Road for Wrexham

After narrowly missing out on the Championship playoffs last season, Wrexham aimed high, investing significantly in new players to realize their dream of climbing to the Premier League. However, their ambitions have faltered, leaving them in 17th place after 12 games, with only 14 points to show for their efforts. Their recent 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers has intensified the scrutiny on manager Phil Parkinson, with speculation about potential replacements like Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker brewing.

EFL Sanctions Unfold

The latest concern arose when Wrexham was penalized for improperly registering two key players before match days. Issa Kabore and Callum O'Hare were both found to be ineligible, leading to a fine of £75,000—of which £25,000 is suspended.

  • Issa Kabore: The young player joined Wrexham from Manchester City for £2 million after a successful loan last season. Unfortunately, Kabore was included in the squad against Birmingham City shortly after his signing, only to discover he lacked the necessary work permit.
  • Callum O'Hare: Acquired from Sheffield United on transfer deadline day for £6.5 million, O'Hare was an unused substitute in the match against Millwall. However, he was not registered in time to participate, making his inclusion against Millwall another breach.

The club has publicly acknowledged these mistakes, stating they hold the correct documentation for Kabore but failed to submit it properly to the EFL. Regarding O'Hare, Wrexham admitted that he wasn’t registered in time for the fixture aspects.

Steps Forward

Wrexham has committed to preventing these issues from occurring in the future, with plans to hire a new club secretary as suggested by media reports.

“We are taking appropriate measures to ensure that we adhere strictly to all EFL regulations,” the club stated after the fine announcement.

While Wrexham's infractions did not result in a points deduction, as they lost against Birmingham City and O'Hare did not participate in the Millwall match, concerns have been raised among fans about the fairness of the penalty. Many feel that being fined alone was lenient, pondering why other teams have faced harsher consequences in similar situations.

Looking Ahead

Wrexham’s focus will now shift to their upcoming match against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Friday evening. The club will be eager to turn their fortunes around as they aim for redemption on and off the field amidst a challenging start to the season.
