West Zone Athletics Meet Empowers Young Runners in Singapore
The inaugural West Zone Athletics Meet showcases young athletes competing passionately on track.
SINGAPORE – The inaugural West Zone Athletics Meet, held at Hwa Chong Institution on October 26, provided a platform for budding athletes to showcase their talents.
A New Experience for Aspiring Athletes
Among the hundred students vying for medals was 15-year-old Ezra Lim, whose passion for running sparked during playful childhood games. Despite not having track and field as a co-curricular activity at Fuhua Secondary School, Ezra channeled his energy into tchoukball, representing his school at inter-school events.
This meet was a critical opportunity for Ezra as he finally stepped onto the track for the first time. Competing in the boys’ U-16 100m, he secured a silver medal with a time of 13.81 seconds. “I was nervous yet excited at the same time,” Ezra shared. “Winning a medal feels fantastic, and I’ve always dreamt of being part of a track competition.”
Exciting Results and Rising Stars
Ezra's time earned him second place, just behind Josan Tok from Yuan Ching Secondary School, who clinched the gold with an impressive 13.26 seconds. Tan Yi Teng from Fuhua completed the podium with a time of 14.03 seconds. Meanwhile, for 15-year-old Leia Ong from Methodist Girls’ School (MGS), the meet was particularly significant. After missing the National School Games (NSG) due to injury, she returned to clock the fastest time of 13.45 seconds in the girls’ U-16 100m finals.
Leia, highly inspired by top Singaporean sprinters like Shanti Pereira and Marc Louis, expressed her joy in representing her school. “It’s meaningful to compete for MGS again. Being part of a team and winning together makes it very special,” she explained. Leia also led her teammates to victory in the 4x100m relay, with schoolmates Chloe Lay and Alexis Wong securing second and third in the individual 100m event, finishing with times of 14.09 seconds and 14.78 seconds respectively.
Encouraging Broader Participation
The West Zone Athletics Meet is part of Singapore Athletics’ (SA) innovative initiative aimed at fostering greater youth involvement in athletics. Attending the event as guest of honour, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo participated in a warm-up session with the young athletes.
SA president Lien Choong Luen emphasized the importance of expanding athletic opportunities to support emerging talents from various schools. “We want to ensure that not just a handful of elite schools dominate in athletic talent,” he noted, referring to the 130 to 140 secondary schools across Singapore.
Deputy president Marinda Teo revealed that the zonal pilot program was inspired by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, aiming to enhance talent identification and participation across the board. With fewer schools competing in NSG recently, the initiative seeks to fill this gap and provide more students with access to training and competition.
For schools lacking track and field options, the program offers seed funding to help establish athletics as a CCA. This support will facilitate better training experiences for athletes leading up to future competitions.
Looking Ahead
The excitement generated by the West Zone Athletics Meet marks a promising step towards a more inclusive athletics landscape in Singapore. By bridging access gaps and providing more opportunities for youth, SA aims to cultivate the next generation of talented athletes eager to make their mark.
