Shakur Stevenson Parts Ways with Zuffa Boxing, Plans New Promotion
Shakur Stevenson has left Zuffa Boxing just three months after signing, aiming to start his own promotional company for future fights.
Shakur Stevenson, the undefeated four-division world champion, has officially severed ties with Zuffa Boxing just three months after joining the promotion. In a candid YouTube video, he shared the decision to request his release after investing weeks in training for potential fights that ultimately did not materialize.
Announcement of Release
Stevenson revealed that Zuffa Boxing granted his request for release over the weekend, allowing him to explore opportunities with other promoters. He emphasized his commitment to taking control of his career by initiating his own boxing promotion, which will enable him greater autonomy regarding future matchups.
Frustrations with Lack of Fights
During his video message, Stevenson conveyed frustration over the lack of progress in fight arrangements. He dedicated about eight weeks to training camps in anticipation of scheduled bouts, but his expectations were unmet.
“I’ve been working my ass off... preparing for fights that I was told were going to happen, and it has not happened,” Stevenson expressed.
Despite his frustration, he remained diplomatic, refusing to assign blame: “It is what it is. This is the business of boxing. I’m not mad at anyone. I’m not pointing no fingers.”
Launching His Own Boxing Promotion
Instead of jumping into another promotional contract, Stevenson is determined to build his own promotional company. He stated, “I am starting my own promotional company, and I’m willing to work with other promoters who share my vision for my career.”
Through this initiative, he hopes to strategically decide on his fights, negotiable networks, and potential co-promoting opportunities.
Career Highlights and Future Aspirations
Stevenson boasts an impressive undefeated record of 25 wins, including 11 knockouts. His last fight took place at Madison Square Garden on January 31, where he secured a unanimous decision victory against Teofimo Lopez, earning him the Ring and WBO junior welterweight titles along with his existing championship titles in featherweight, junior lightweight, and lightweight.
Looking ahead, Stevenson aims to secure significant bouts within the 135 and 140-pound divisions. He made it clear that he is open to facing any opponent willing to step into the ring with him.
“It doesn’t matter the name. None of these guys can beat me,” he confidently asserted.
Additionally, Stevenson hinted at a future transition to welterweight at 147 pounds, though he emphasized the importance of timing, indicating that he would make such a move when he feels adequately prepared.
Aiming for the Top
Stevenson’s aspirations extend beyond just notable fights; he aims to become the best pound-for-pound fighter in boxing. He concluded his video by appreciating his supporters, assuring them of his commitment to achieving greatness.
“For my people that trust and believe in my talent, I will not let y’all down,” he vowed.
With his release from Zuffa Boxing now official, Stevenson stands poised to pursue his ambitions through his new promotional company and potential collaborations with other entities. His next moves will undoubtedly shape the future of his boxing career, as he actively seeks the high-stakes matchups he desires.
