Indian Women's League Delayed Again, IWL 2 Set to Begin
The Indian Women's League's start is pushed to November, while IWL 2 is scheduled to kick off on October 23.
Delay in Indian Women's League Start Date
The Indian Women's League (IWL), a key tournament for women's football in India, will now commence in mid-November after being postponed from its originally scheduled date of October 16. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has yet to announce the fixture details for this much-anticipated league.
IWL 2 to Proceed as Planned
In contrast, the second-tier league, IWL 2, is confirmed to start as originally planned on October 23. This series of matches will take place across various states including Goa, Meghalaya, Odisha, and Maharashtra.
Logistical Hurdles and Future Plans
According to internal sources, the postponement of the IWL is due to logistical challenges that the AIFF is currently addressing. An official clarified that the delay is not an issue of readiness, but rather a matter of ensuring that all venues can accommodate evening matches with proper floodlights. The goal is to have each location fully equipped for a smooth league operation.
While discussions were held about possibly implementing a home-and-away format for the IWL, it appears that the current plan will mirror that of IWL 2, with matches centralized at one or two locations to streamline operations.
Impact of Delays on Women's Football
This latest delay adds to a series of uncertainties surrounding women's football in India. The timeline for IWL was initially set from September 3 to January 24, and IWL 2 from July 9 to August 22. However, both leagues faced disruptions due to a protracted negotiation process between the AIFF and Capri Sports regarding the commercial and marketing rights.
It wasn’t until September 22 that a deal was finalized, granting Capri Sports the commercial control over both leagues. Nearly a month has passed, and organizers are still in the process of preparing for the top division’s games.
The ongoing adjustments highlight the need for stability and a solid framework for promoting and developing women's football in the country. As fans and players alike await the start of the IWL, there remains optimism that IWL 2 will set the stage effectively for future developments.
