Rusty-Jake Rodriguez's Stunning Grand Slam Qualification Story
Rusty-Jake Rodriguez's journey to qualify for the Grand Slam of Darts is nothing short of extraordinary.
In an impressive display of skill, ten more players have secured their spots for the Grand Slam of Darts, taking place in Leicester. Among them, Rusty-Jake Rodriguez stands out due to his remarkable achievements during the qualifiers.
On a decisive Friday afternoon, every tour card holder without a Grand Slam qualification had one last chance to clinch a place in the 48-player event, which features a staggering £1 million prize pool.
Rodriguez's Path to Victory
Rodriguez, an Austrian dart player with siblings also in the sport, faced three opponents in his quest for qualification, having avoided the top 160 bracket. Many expected him to struggle, especially against Damon Heta, a top 32 player and fourth seed, in the opening match. However, Rodriguez surprised everyone by averaging an impressive 97 and winning the match 5-3.
Next up was Ritchie Edhouse, a past winner of the European Championship. Despite Edhouse's reputation, Rodriguez dominated the game, finishing with a solid performance that led to a 5-1 victory and a 92 average.
In the final match, Rodriguez faced Tom Bissell, who presented a strong challenge. Bissell, having earned his tour card in 2025, improved his performance dramatically in 2026 and is set to compete in the upcoming World Championship. However, Rodriguez took the lead early, winning the first three legs and ultimately securing a 5-2 victory with an average of 94.
Turning Point for Rodriguez
This achievement is particularly significant for Rodriguez, who had struggled throughout the year with only two wins to his name until this recent qualification day. Before this, he endured a tough stretch of 12 consecutive losses since his last win on July 2 during the Players Championship 19.
In fact, his triumphs on this day were more than he had achieved in the entire year, showcasing a dramatic turnaround in his fortunes and performance level.
