Kimi Antonelli Nears Historic Title Win in Mexico
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is on the brink of becoming the youngest F1 champion after a strong performance in Austin.
Kimi Antonelli is just one step away from making history as the youngest Formula 1 world champion after a stunning performance at the recent race in Austin, Texas.
Almost a Champion
The Mercedes prodigy managed to secure a victory from pole position, but fell short of officially clinching the championship there. His teammate, George Russell, finished in eighth place - one spot too high, preventing Antonelli from wrapping up the title immediately.
For Antonelli to secure the championship, he will need to finish at least ninth in the upcoming race in Mexico. This result would shatter Sebastian Vettel's long-standing record as the youngest champion in F1 history.
A Light-Hearted Celebration Awaiting
Toto Wolff, the team principal of Mercedes, expressed his confidence in Antonelli's near-certain victory with a chuckle. “Kimi has won the World Championship 99.9999 percent,” he remarked, hinting at a celebration planned for the young driver.
If Antonelli seals the deal in Mexico, Wolff promised a tequila party, but if things don’t go as planned, the festivities will move to Brazil with caipirinhas in hand. “Austin may not have been the best spot for him to celebrate,” Wolff added, referencing the legal drinking age.
Handling Pressure Like a Champion
Despite the intense pressure surrounding his potential championship win, Antonelli managed to focus on the task at hand. “There has been a lot of talk about the championship, and I tried not to let it get to me,” he admitted after the race.
It was a crucial result not just for Antonelli personally, but also for his team, as they have invested substantial resources into his development over the last nine years. Wolff praised the young driver, saying, “Today was truly the drive of a champion who isn’t yet a champion.”
Investment in the Future
Mercedes has reportedly invested approximately $22 million in Antonelli’s development. With his performance, earnings could skyrocket to around $11 million, including potential bonuses, by the time of the 2026 season.
Wolff knows the value of this investment, especially when considering the much higher salary they would have had to pay a slower, more experienced driver like Lewis Hamilton.
Reflections on Champions Past
When asked if he remembers Vettel winning his first title in 2010, Antonelli laughed, noting that he was just four years old at the time. “I remember playing with Hot Wheels, but I don’t remember that,” he joked, highlighting the generational shift in the sport.
Tough Times for Russell
Meanwhile, George Russell had a challenging race, feeling outpaced and underwhelmed. “The pace was simply rubbish today, to put it briefly,” he commented, expressing his frustration about not being able to keep up with his teammate.
As the countdown to the Mexico race begins, all eyes will be on Kimi Antonelli as he attempts to secure a historic championship title, while Russell seeks to overcome his recent struggles on the track.
