Jak Crawford: A Rising Star in Formula 1 From Texas
Jak Crawford, a promising young talent, returns to Texas as the Aston Martin F1 reserve driver, ready to make his mark.
AUSTIN, Texas — Jak Crawford’s journey from a go-kart enthusiast at age six to the reserve driver for the Aston Martin Formula 1 team is nothing short of remarkable. Once racing at a local track in Katy, Texas, he now finds himself representing a team at the renowned Circuit of the Americas (COTA), all while striving to improve the car alongside seasoned drivers.
A Childhood Dream Comes True
Reflecting on his journey, Jak can't help but marvel at how far he’s come. He recalls his younger self, a fan of NASCAR legends like Joey Logano and Jeff Gordon, never imagining he would one day be part of a Formula 1 team. "It’s pretty crazy. I thought of racing as a weekend fun activity, not a career path. But here I am, living the dream," Jak shared amidst the buzz of the bustling paddock.
From NASCAR to Formula 1
Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, Jak shifted to Houston at the age of six. While his father recognized the traditional routes into racing, Jak took a different path after some time in Europe. "I felt like I was in the right place at the right time," he explained. His breakthrough came when he signed with the Red Bull Junior Team in January 2020, leading him to compete in Formula 4.
After securing a spot in Formula 3 by 2021, Jak made his impressive ascent to Formula 2 in 2023. "Every category was a learning experience. I had to adapt quickly, and that process ultimately made me a better driver," he remarked.
Transition to Aston Martin
With five podium finishes in his debut Formula 2 season, Jak faced a pivotal change as he departed from the Red Bull program. "I realized every driver has a unique path. For me, it has involved changing teams frequently. I’m grateful for the invaluable support I received from Red Bull over the past four years," he reflected.
Following his transition, Aston Martin welcomed Jak into its junior driver development program. This opportunity not only replaced the previous support but also allowed him to test an F1 car for the first time. In just a few months, Jak found himself driving the AMR22 at the Red Bull Ring, further igniting his aspirations within the sport.
Learning from the Best
As he continues in his reserve role, Jak is learning from experienced teammates like Lance Stroll and two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso. "In Formula 1, the approach is much different than in junior series where the cars are standardized," he explained. The focus here is on developing a competitive car, enhancing both performance for the current season and looking forward.
Jak emphasized the collaborative effort required in F1. “In this environment, every adjustment counts towards future success. With regulations in place for several years, our strategy involves more than just immediate changes—it’s about shaping the car over time,” he stated.
A Future Full of Potential
Having participated in three outings in an F1 car this season, Jak is keen to use his insights to foster car improvements. "When you’re racing, you start to notice things you may overlook in a spec series. Here, you have a team ready to make impactful adjustments for the future," he shared.
As Crawford returns to COTA, tracks where it all began, he feels the completeness of his journey. Although his chance to race regularly in F1 hasn’t yet arrived, he’s steadfastly preparing for when that door opens. His philosophy is simple: remain as ready as possible for any opportunity that may arise.
