Boxing Community Demands Change in BFI Leadership
Prominent figures in Indian boxing express concerns over BFI governance, advocating for accountability and grassroots development.
Concerns About BFI Leadership
On October 24, a press conference held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi brought together a coalition of Olympians, awardees, esteemed coaches, and former boxers. They united in their concerns regarding the leadership of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) under President Ajay Singh, calling for changes and accountability.
Among the speakers were notable figures such as Rajkumar Sangwan, SR Singh, Anup Singh, and Manoj Kumar, with Secretary General Pramod Kumar presenting a vision centered on reform and grassroots development.
Addressing Administrative Challenges
Pramod Kumar took the opportunity to highlight various administrative challenges he faces in his role. His dedication to promoting grassroots boxing was evident as he stated, “As a former player, my commitment is always towards the athletes.” He went on to express frustration at the lack of communication from Ajay Singh and lamented the absence of sponsorship opportunities for boxing events, even while recognizing the support from the Sports Authority of India.
Kumar elaborated on initiatives he has spearheaded, such as starting boxing programs for those under 12 in Uttar Pradesh and bringing young talent into the spotlight. “If we don’t nurture talent from the grassroots, how can we expect to see future champions?” he questioned, referencing his experience with Neeraj Chopra as a testament to early talent identification.
Advocating for a Unified Development Plan
The boxing fraternity called for the establishment of a comprehensive development plan that outlines clear objectives for grassroots initiatives, including district and state-level competitions, and national championships. There was an emphasis on regularity in organizing national championships with a strong focus on junior categories, ensuring that the sport's foundational levels receive adequate attention.
Moreover, they proposed a transparent process for the appointment of technical officials, urging the BFI to publish an annual calendar of competitions and ensure the selection criteria for national camps are clear and widely available. The community advocated for coaching appointments to be carried out with an eye toward the best interests of Indian boxing, eschewing favoritism.
Emphasizing the Role of Coaches
A significant part of the discussion revolved around the recognition of Indian coaches who have contributed to developing world-class champions. The boxing community insisted on incorporating these coaches into national training programs and ensuring they have a say in talent identification and development. There was a request for more opportunities for Indian coaches to participate in international events to enhance their skills.
Additonally, the group underscored the importance of ongoing professional development for coaches, referees, and judges through workshops and clinics focused on contemporary training techniques and athlete welfare.
Building a Stronger Future for Boxing
The gathering included respected figures like Brigadier D.N. Devine Jones and other senior members who have laid a strong foundation for Indian boxing. The boxing community emphasized the necessity of involving all stakeholders in policymaking and development discussions to ensure a cohesive future.
Pramod Kumar called on the BFI leadership to foster unity, stating, “We need to come together as a sport to overcome the challenges we face.” He encouraged stakeholders, including state associations, coaches, and former champions, to collaborate toward common goals.
A Call for Accountability and Change
An upcoming Special General House Meeting on October 28, 2026, is set to address a No-Confidence Motion against Ajay Singh. The boxing community has voiced the importance of conducting this process openly, allowing all members to share their views without intimidation.
In conclusion, Pramod Kumar reiterated the potential of Indian boxing to enhance its international achievements through concerted reforms and collaborative efforts. “We must make the right changes to create better opportunities for our boxers,” he affirmed. The boxing fraternity's resolve highlights a commitment to advance the sport with transparency and fairness at its core.
