Zimbabwe Boosts Cricket Venues Ahead of World Cup 2027
Zimbabwe is making significant progress on its cricket venues as it prepares to co-host the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2027.
As preparations ramp up for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, Zimbabwe is making notable strides in upgrading its cricket venues. The Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls is at the forefront of these developments, with major construction nearing completion.
Exciting Progress in Victoria Falls
The stadium’s completion is on the horizon, with Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) currently focusing on finishing touches. Recent inspections conducted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed positive advancements in infrastructure at the three host cities: Victoria Falls, Harare, and Bulawayo.
With vital facilities such as the media and broadcast centers, changing rooms, and medical areas largely finished, attention has shifted to installing bucket seats and roofing. Givemore Makoni, Managing Director of ZC, shared his enthusiasm, stating, “The main building works are as good as complete and we are now concentrating on the finishes that will bring the stadium together.”
Upcoming Matches and Testing Phase
Plans for an inaugural trial match at the stadium are in the works, with an announcement expected soon. Full completion is targeted for mid-2027, coinciding with an international series designed to rigorously test the venue before the World Cup.
“This initial trial match will allow us to assess the playing facilities and essential match-day operations,” Makoni noted.
Zimbabwe is co-hosting the World Cup alongside South Africa and Namibia, making this an exciting time for cricket in the region.
Inspections Highlight Venue Improvements
During recent evaluations, ICC Tournament Director Sarah Edgar and Zimbabwe Tournament Director Hamilton Masakadza acknowledged the significant progress made at all inspected venues. “Improvements to the infrastructure are clear and will ensure the venues meet the necessary standards for the tournament,” Edgar remarked.
Victoria Falls stands out, promising spectators a unique blend of international cricket in a stunning environment renowned as a global tourist destination.
Preparations in both Harare and Bulawayo are also underway. Existing facilities are being adapted to meet modern ICC standards, with enhancements including refurbishing selected stands at Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club to include bucket seating, as well as installing floodlights in both these locations and the Victoria Falls stadium.
