Tiffany Teo Advances to Asian Games Final After Weight Drama

NAGOYA – In an unexpected turn of events, Tiffany Teo, Singapore’s MMA star, found herself advancing to the finals of the Asian Games due to a weight stipulation after her semi-final match ended in a draw.

Draw Leads to Controversy

Teo faced India's Suchika Tariyal on September 21 at the Nagoya City Inae Sports Center. The bout was tightly contested, leading to a stalemate after two rounds. An overtime round was introduced, where Teo was initially declared the winner.

However, emotions ran high when Tariyal and her team lodged an appeal regarding the decision. Following a video review by a separate group of referees, the original ruling was overturned, resulting in a draw. This unexpected twist turned the match's outcome toward a weight-based tiebreaker in accordance with the Asian Mixed Martial Arts Association's guidelines.

Weight Tiebreaker Decides the Match

During the morning weigh-in, Teo recorded a weight of 58.8 kilograms, a fraction lighter than Tariyal, who weighed 59.85 kilograms. Thus, Teo was ultimately declared the winner, securing her spot in the final.

Teo will face Khilola Sobirova of Uzbekistan, who previously defeated Cambodia's Cheng Dalin in another semi-final clash, in the championship bout scheduled for September 22.

Determination and Preparation

Before the appeal was initiated, Teo reflected on her performance and aspirations. "I’m glad that my efforts led to a win because winning this gold medal has always been my ultimate goal," she stated.

Teo explained her mental approach to the situation, stating, “I focused on controlling my breathing, letting my heart rate come down, and giving everything I had in that final round.” Her determination to avoid any regrets propelled her through the intense match.

Emotional Aftermath

As Teo celebrated her victory, Tariyal’s emotional reaction highlighted the intense feelings surrounding the match. She expressed her disappointment in Indian media, questioning the fairness of the decision and insisting that she fought valiantly within the weight limit.

The Mixed Martial Arts Association of Singapore (MMAAS) clarified their stance, emphasizing that the resolution adhered to the established rules and arbitration processes. They acknowledged the unexpected circumstances but maintained respect for the outcome.

Historic Achievement

Teo's journey in the Asian Games has been particularly significant, marking Singapore's first foray into MMA at this international event. She demonstrated remarkable adaptability, competing on consecutive days and managing her weight effectively, a stark contrast to traditional professional MMA events that often involve prolonged training and weight cuts.

After her previous match against Iran's Arezou Salimighalehtaki, which she won by unanimous decision, Teo secured at least a joint-bronze medal, ensuring Singapore's place in MMA history at the Games.

As the final approaches, Teo remains resolutely focused on achieving the coveted gold medal. Her preparation and past experiences will be crucial as she revisits her strategy against Sobirova, especially following their encounter in May, where Sobirova emerged victorious.

Teo affirmed, "I concentrate on elements I can control. I believe that if I showcase my best skills, success will follow." With determination fueling her spirit, she aims to turn the tables in the upcoming final.
