Sungjae Im's bunker shot ricochets back at Truist Championship

Sunday 10 May 2026 — At the Truist Championship, Sungjae Im produced what many are calling one of the unluckiest shots in golf. Attempting an escape from a greenside bunker, Im's shot climbed the bank, struck the underside of the grandstand and, after a dramatic bounce, rolled agonisingly back into the sand.

The replay captures the full sequence: a clean strike, the seemingly hopeful ricochet off the structure and the heart-sinking return to the bunker. The crowd and commentators reacted in disbelief as Im was left to play another recovery shot from almost the same spot.

The moment has been widely shared as a highlight — not for brilliance, but for its sheer bad luck. Such incidents are a reminder of how much chance can play a role in golf, even for the game's most skilled players. Im's reaction and the on-course atmosphere underlined the mix of frustration and resignation that follows an unfortunate bounce like this.
