Shaun Edwards Reveals Offer to Join England for 2027 World Cup Was Declined
Defensive coach Shaun Edwards shares that England's head coach Steve Borthwick turned down his proposal to join the team for the next World Cup.
Shaun Edwards, a renowned defense coach, has revealed that he approached England's head coach, Steve Borthwick, with an offer to join the team for the upcoming 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, but it was ultimately declined.
Edwards' Impressive Track Record
Earlier this year, Edwards wrapped up six successful years with the French national team. During his tenure, Les Bleus clinched three Six Nations titles, including consecutive championships in 2025 and 2026. The 60-year-old coach has also made a mark in club rugby, where he contributed to Wasps' success, securing two Champions Cups and four domestic championships.
Previously, he served as Wales' defense coach from 2008 to 2019, guiding the team to three Grand Slam victories in the Six Nations. His extensive experience and successful track record have kept him in discussions regarding roles within various national teams, including England.
Details of the Offer
In a recent interview on the BBC's Rugby Union Weekly podcast, Edwards disclosed that he had a candid conversation with Borthwick. He expressed his willingness to take on any role, even as an assistant kit manager, stating, "I said he can make me assistant kit man and I'll be there, I'll be ready for work."
Borthwick, however, indicated that he was satisfied with his current coaching staff and the team's direction. Edwards respected Borthwick's honesty and decision, understanding that every coach has their preferences and choice of support staff.
Current Coaching Dynamics
Although Edwards won't be joining the England setup for now, Richard Wigglesworth currently takes the reins as defense coach, supported by Byron McGuigan, Joe El-Abd, and Kevin Sinfield among the coaching staff. These coaches are tasked with preparing the team for crucial upcoming matches.
England's next fixture in the Nations Championship is set for Sunday, where they will face Australia at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium. Following this match, they are scheduled to compete against Japan and New Zealand on November 14 and November 21, respectively.
