In a significant move for the future of rugby in Samoa, key stakeholders including World Rugby, the Samoan Government, Lakapi Samoa, and the Samoa National Olympic Committee have reached an agreement to ensure that the sport continues to thrive amid a governance review.

Key Meetings Inspire Progress

This agreement comes on the heels of constructive discussions held in Apia, led by World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson and Samoa's Prime Minister, Hon. Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt. These meetings were prompted by recent governance concerns that had been raised by the Prime Minister on behalf of the Government.

Commitment to High-Performance Rugby

One of the central aspects of this agreement is the commitment to maintaining the integrity of high-performance rugby programs in Samoa. This ensures that the national teams remain eligible and prepared to compete at the highest levels, including participation in the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 and the World Rugby Nations Cup.

To maintain momentum, all involved parties emphasized the importance of a swift resolution to governance issues affecting Lakapi Samoa, which oversees rugby operations in Samoa.

Interim Measures to Be Implemented

To address these issues collaboratively, the parties have decided on several interim steps that will take effect immediately:

  • The self-suspension of Lakapi Samoa from the World Rugby Council, which can only be lifted through a formal request to the Executive Board.
  • The creation of an Independent Review Group, composed of Samoan leaders, to evaluate the governance of rugby in Samoa.
  • A review of Lakapi Samoa's compliance with World Rugby's membership criteria conducted by an oversight committee.
  • Transfer of authority over high-performance rugby programs in Samoa to the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (SASNOC), with a stewardship group overseeing operations related to national teams.

This structured approach aims to protect the interests of players and ensure systemic improvements in governance.

Ensure Uninterrupted Domestic Play

Crucially, this agreement highlights that local rugby activities in Samoa will continue unaffected during this review period. There is a shared understanding that while governance structures may need refinement, the heart of rugby in Samoa — its players and community programs — deserves uninterrupted support.

All stakeholders have expressed their appreciation for SASNOC's proactive engagement in helping to pave the way for high-performance pathways for players.

A Bright Future Ahead

The ongoing commitment from World Rugby and the Samoan Government signifies a positive trajectory for rugby in the region, and the collaboration between all parties holds promise for enhanced governance and performance standards. As preparations begin for upcoming international competitions, there is optimism about the resilience and growth of rugby in Samoa.
