Oxford University Expands Formula 1 Scholarship for Future Engineers
The Formula 1 Engineering Scholarship at Oxford has been extended, supporting diverse students in their undergraduate studies.
Continued Support for Aspiring Engineers
Oxford University has announced the extension of its Formula 1 Engineering Scholarship program for another three years, reinforcing its commitment to foster diverse talent in motorsport. This initiative is part of a collaboration between Formula 1 and five leading universities aimed at providing financial aid and opportunities to students pursuing degrees in engineering.
Scholarship Details
Since its inception in 2021, the scholarship has benefited 48 scholars, including 10 from Oxford's Engineering Science department. Each year, two scholarships are awarded at Oxford, which cover the tuition fees and provide a stipend for living expenses for the entirety of the four-year MEng Engineering Science program.
This initiative is designed not only to support students financially but also to promote inclusivity in motorsport, particularly for individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.
Eligibility and Opportunities
The scholarship is specifically aimed at Black and Minority Ethnic students from low-income households, with an emphasis on applicants from Black, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi communities. Female applicants are especially encouraged to apply, furthering efforts to enhance diversity within the engineering field.
In addition to financial support, scholarship recipients will have exciting opportunities to gain real-world experience. This includes a work placement with one of the ten Formula 1 teams during their second year, a tour of the Formula 1 Media and Technology Centre, and exclusive behind-the-scenes access at a Grand Prix event.
Statements from University Leaders
Professor Clive Siviour, who leads the Engineering Science Department at Oxford, expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, "We are thrilled that Formula 1 continues to support this vital program. By eliminating financial barriers, we empower talented students from various backgrounds to excel at Oxford and fully benefit from what an Oxford education has to offer."
Ellen Jones, the Head of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) at Formula 1, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of the scholarship. "We are proud to extend the Formula 1 Engineering Scholarship for another three academic years. This investment illustrates our dedication to fostering an inclusive environment in motorsport and creating pathways for the next generation of talent to thrive in this field."

A current recipient of the scholarship shared their transformative experience, stating, "This scholarship has dramatically changed my life. It has allowed me to cover all my costs while studying at Oxford, enabling me to concentrate on my coursework without the constant stress of financial constraints. I am incredibly grateful to the donors and the managing board for making this possible and for the opportunity to maximize my university experience."
