Max Verstappen Claims First Victory at Singapore Grand Prix
Max Verstappen finally conquered the Singapore Grand Prix, securing his long-awaited victory at the Marina Bay Circuit.
SINGAPORE – After nine visits to the challenging Marina Bay Street Circuit, Max Verstappen has finally claimed his first victory in Singapore, overcoming previous close calls to secure the win.
Despite an illustrious career as a four-time Formula 1 world champion, Verstappen had never managed to win this particular race until October 11, when he clinched triumph at the Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix. On this occasion, he celebrated not just a victory but also his 250th career race.
A Dominant Performance
Driving with immense skill, Verstappen finished the race in 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 0.785 seconds, crossing the finish line with a commanding lead. Charles Leclerc from Ferrari followed in second place, finishing 7.335 seconds behind, while Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes took third place.
As he completed the race, fireworks lit up the night sky above the 4.927km circuit, a vibrant end to a race that had seen its share of physical challenges and limited overtaking opportunities.
Overcoming Challenges
Reflecting on his achievement, Verstappen expressed his satisfaction: “It’s taken a while, but this race was very good. We had the pace when we needed to, particularly on the soft tyres. Fortunately, it all worked out.”
The victory marked a significant milestone for the Dutch racer, who had previously come close to winning in Singapore, with three second-place finishes in 2018, 2024, and 2025.
Career Milestones and Championship Standing
Verstappen's win in Singapore was his 73rd career victory and his second win of the 2026 season, having won in Bahrain just a week prior. This success propelled him to fourth place in the drivers' championship standings with a total of 221 points.
Meanwhile, Antonelli's performance allowed him to maintain a lead in the championship race, with a significant 102-point advantage over his teammate George Russell, who finished ninth. This sets the stage for Antonelli to potentially secure his first championship title at the upcoming United States Grand Prix in Austin on October 25.
With Verstappen breaking through in Singapore, he's joined a diverse group of recent winners at the circuit, marking this race as a common challenge for many top drivers. The night race has seen 12 victories from pole position out of 17 editions, demonstrating the historical trend of pole sitters performing well.
Post-Race Celebrations
As the atmosphere celebrated Verstappen's victory, he was seen leaping in joy, embracing his race engineers as the Dutch national anthem played for the first time at the Singapore Grand Prix. The celebration was amplified by performances from pop icons like Janet Jackson and Lana Del Rey nearby, underscoring the festive mood in Singapore that night.
With his maiden win at this iconic venue, Verstappen has not only marked a personal achievement but has also laid the groundwork for an exciting finish to the season. Fans and teammates alike are eagerly anticipating what he will accomplish next as he continues to compete at the highest level.
