Mark Allen has opened up about his emotional state following a first-round defeat to Jordan Brown at the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast, leading him to question the future of his snooker career.

Career Concerns After a Tough Match

The 40-year-old Allen faced Brown in his first competitive match since the highly publicized semi-final loss to Wu Yize in the World Championship last April. During that match, Allen narrowly missed a crucial black, which led to his defeat. Having taken time away from the tour to deal with personal challenges, which he has chosen to keep private, he suffered a 4-2 loss to Brown, raising concerns about his professional path.

Emotional Reflections

In an interview with TNT Sports after the match, Allen described himself as being in a “bad place” and expressed the difficulty of returning to competitive snooker. “I felt like if I was going to play one last time, playing here at the Waterfront, where it all started in 2005, against one of my best mates — I thought that was a better way to sign out,” he mentioned.

When pressed about his potential retirement, Allen didn’t shy away, reflecting, “I’ve been flooded with support but the problems are within. I just don’t see a future with snooker in it, if I’m honest.” He acknowledged that although snooker has been his passion since childhood, recent months have yielded significant challenges that have redefined his perspective on the sport.

Support from Friends and the Snooker Community

Friend and fellow competitor, Jordan Brown, who secured victory in this match, expressed his profound support for Allen. “It’s just great to see Mark back playing. He obviously came through a tough time off the table, and I’m with him every step of the way,” Brown stated. Brown highlighted the importance of mental health, calling for community support for Allen as he navigates this tough period.

In addition, the World Snooker Tour and the WPBSA have stepped forward, offering their backing and resources to help him through this challenging chapter in his life.

First-Round Upsets at the Northern Ireland Open

Allen isn’t alone in facing early exits at this year’s Northern Ireland Open. Fellow competitors like Shaun Murphy and Mark Selby fell to opponents in similar fashion, with Murphy losing 4-2 to Liam Davies and Selby also bowing out with a loss by the same scoreline. Other notable early-round disappointments included world No. 1 Zhao Xintong, who was defeated by Gao Yang, and Neil Robertson, who lost 4-1 to Ricky Walden. On a brighter note, reigning champion Jack Lisowski managed to advance to the last 32 after defeating Huang Jiahao 4-1.
