Jon Rahm Weighs PGA Tour Return Despite LIV Golf Exit
Jon Rahm expresses willingness to face penalties for a potential return to the PGA Tour, amid uncertainties for LIV Golf players.
Jon Rahm has openly stated his readiness to accept similar penalties as those imposed on fellow golfer Brooks Koepka, in order to make a return to the PGA Tour. However, with the current state of affairs for LIV Golf players, the scenario remains less than clear.
PGA Tour's Position and Rahm's Choices
As of August 25, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced that there are no plans to revive the Returning Member Program. This leaves players like Rahm, who opted not to join LIV Golf 2.0, in a state of uncertainty, particularly after welcoming his fourth child recently.
Potential Suspension and Future Plans
During a press briefing at the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship, Rahm indicated that he would consider playing on the DP World Tour in 2027 if it meant navigating a possible one-year suspension. This suspension aligns with what was imposed on former Masters champion Patrick Reed and others who transitioned to LIV Golf.
“The situation with the PGA Tour is quite distinct,” he explained. “I haven't had a chance to discuss it with them yet. I'm hoping things will be resolved soon, and then I can see where I stand.”
Reflecting on the LIV Golf Experience
Rahm was one of four golfers who received an invitation to the Returning Member Program earlier this year. This program was designed for LIV golfers with major victories in the past two years, who had also been missing from the tour for two years, to return under specific terms.
While Koepka accepted the offer, benefiting from terms that included forfeiting player equity and contributing $5 million to charity, Rahm appears skeptical that a similar arrangement could be extended to him. “If I were to be offered the same conditions as Brooks, I would definitely consider it. However, I seriously doubt they would present me with the same deal,” he remarked.
Career Highlights and Future Outlook
As he approaches his 32nd birthday on November 10, Rahm recently concluded a separation agreement with LIV Golf on October 15 after a significant tenure with the league. While the exact terms of his contract remain undisclosed, it’s believed he was under an agreement valued at approximately $300 million, with more than $100 million still due in future guarantees. Additionally, his on-course earnings exceeded $106 million during his time in LIV.
Reflecting on his stint with the organization, Rahm shared, “Those three years were definitely positive. I enjoyed a lot of remarkable golf.” Yet, his enthusiasm waned regarding LIV Golf’s new direction under LIV 2.0. He decided not to accompany the changes, feeling that they did not align with his original expectations for the league.
The Future of LIV Golf
Uncertainty looms over LIV Golf’s future, especially after reports surfaced in spring about financial challenges, especially regarding funding from the Saudi Arabian backers. Things took a turn when BC Partners Credit, an investment firm, stepped in with plans to allocate $300 million to support what is now referred to as LIV 2.0.
As the dust settles on the competing tours and the fate of LIV players remains in limbo, Rahm’s potential return to the PGA Tour could signify a pivotal moment for the golf community.
