Glen Durrant, a celebrated figure in the world of darts and a three-time BDO World Champion, has voiced his confidence in two promising talents from the North East: Jamie Owens and Benjamin Smith. The Middlesbrough native, who claimed victory in the PDC Premier League before retiring in 2022, is now channeling his expertise into coaching and punditry.

Rising Star: Jamie Owens

During a chat with Pure Digital PR, Durrant expressed his admiration for Jamie Owens, describing him as possibly the finest player in the region at present. Owens, who previously excelled as a Northern League footballer, has transitioned into darts with remarkable skill.

Durrant noted, "He's a former Northern League footballer, so he's full of confidence. However, what sets him apart is his grit; his journey mirrors that of Gerwyn Price, transitioning from one sport to another with great success."

Owens, who has an impressive football legacy with over 500 goals and a memorable appearance at Wembley in the FA Vase final, made his darts debut in the Modus Super Series in 2024. He continues to demonstrate his prowess in the sport.

Spotlight on Benjamin Smith

Durrant also highlighted Benjamin Smith, a young talent from Billingham, whom he encountered during a coaching session. Durrant fondly recalled the initial meeting:

“A young kid came in from Billingham by the name of Benjamin Smith. He was cocky, arrogant and tall; he would have been about 14 or 15 years old at the time.”

Since that initial impression, Durrant has become a huge supporter of Smith, tracking his progress closely. He remarked, “I look out for his scores and his dad, Andy, sends me all his ADC results. I think he's the best player to come from the area since I finished.”

Smith has been climbing the ranks in UK darts and recently made headlines by securing a spot in a Super16 qualifier, bringing him closer to the Junior Darts Corporation's premier youth tournament. His potential is being widely recognized as he matures into a skilled competitor.

A Bright Future Ahead

With Glen Durrant's endorsement, both Jamie Owens and Benjamin Smith are anticipated to make significant impacts in the darts arena. Their unique stories and backgrounds not only inspire fans but also pave the way for the next generation of players in the sport.

As they continue their journey in darts, both players stand poised to achieve remarkable feats in the coming years. Keep an eye on these Teesside stars as they forge their paths in the professional circuit.
