The world of football is often painted as glitzy and glamorous, filled with fortunes and fame. However, for some players, the reality can be drastically different.

Kevin Kyle, a former professional footballer from Scotland, is one such example. His journey from being a player for Scottish national teams and clubs like Rangers to working on a ferry cleaning toilets is a poignant reminder of the challenges athletes can face post-retirement.

A Football Career in Review

Kevin Kyle began his professional career in the early 2000s at Sunderland, where he made 13 appearances in the Premier League. His career spanned several clubs, including Huddersfield Town, Coventry City, and Wolves, before returning to Scotland in 2009.

His time in the Scottish leagues included stints with Kilmarnock, Heart of Midlothian, Rangers, Ayr United, and Newton Stewart, culminating in his retirement from football in 2014. Throughout his career, he proudly represented Scotland internationally, earning 10 caps and scoring once against the Hong Kong League XI.

Life After Football

After retiring, Kyle found himself in dire financial straits. Reports revealed that he was working on board ferries in the Shetland Islands, handling tasks like restocking supplies and cleaning facilities for offshore workers.

In an interview around that time, Kyle succinctly stated, “I’m trying to provide for my family.” This dedication to his family overshadowed his previous life as a professional athlete.

Photos surfaced of him working on the Regina Baltic, a ferry that had been repurposed into a floating hotel for workers. Kyle's background as a footballer brought a certain level of scrutiny and judgment to his new position, as many were surprised to see someone who once played at a high level taking on such a role.

The Struggles with Gambling Addiction

Much of Kyle's financial difficulties can be traced back to a serious gambling addiction. Reports indicated that during his most financially prosperous years, Kyle often wagered weekly amounts upwards of £7,000. He acknowledged that these habits led to his eventual downfall.

Reflecting on his experiences, he described taking on various jobs, including working in kitchens and as a taxi driver, as a means to escape the judgment he felt from others. “I had to keep working, it was the right thing to do,” he remarked.

He expressed the difficulty of accepting his current situation, admitting that revealing his taxi driving job often drew judgmental responses, while a position as a youth coach might garner admiration despite potentially lower pay. “People react differently to various roles,” he noted, hinting at the stigma attached to certain jobs.

A New Chapter in Life

Despite the obstacles he faced, Kyle has mirrored the resilience he showed on the football pitch in his current endeavors. He has carved out a new path as a successful podcaster and joined the Open Goal podcast in 2018.

In addition to his podcasting career, Kyle is committed to mental health advocacy. By sharing his story, he aims to assist others who might be grappling with similar challenges, offering support and insights into his journey.

Today, Kevin Kyle stands as an example of how one can navigate through life’s unexpected turns while striving to make a positive impact in the lives of others.
