The Sepang International Circuit prepares for an exciting Formula 1 weekend, attracting 200,000 fans.
As the engines roar back to life, the Formula 1 excitement is palpable in Malaysia, with the Sepang International Circuit gearing up for a thrilling Grand Prix weekend. After a nine-year hiatus, this significant event is set to welcome a crowd of 200,000 spectators.
Air Travel and Hospitality Preparedness
Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) is bracing for an influx of visitors, with October 4 expected to be the busiest day. According to Mohd Izani Ghani, the managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), hotel bookings near the airport are at full capacity, particularly at the Sama-Sama Hotel, which is accommodating many F1 attendees.
Ensuring Smooth Operations
To facilitate a seamless experience for travelers, a special task force has been established, involving Malaysia Airports and various governmental agencies. Izani emphasized the importance of managing passenger flow effectively during this busy period.
"Our goal is to ensure everything runs smoothly. We will assist guests as much as possible," he stated during a welcome reception for Gulf Air's inaugural direct flight from Bahrain to Kuala Lumpur.
With the final day of the event anticipated to see the highest passenger volumes, Izani urged attendees to consider using public transport to further alleviate potential congestion around the airport and circuit area.
Gulf Air's Contribution to the Event
In response to the strong demand for air travel associated with the Grand Prix, Gulf Air has expanded its flight offerings, adding six additional flights for the weekend. The airline’s CEO, Martin Gauss, noted that their flights were fully booked in anticipation of this exciting event.
"We are thrilled to be part of this occasion and appreciate the efforts made by both Malaysian and Bahraini authorities to facilitate this collaboration," Gauss remarked. He expressed hope that increased tourism would flow both ways as a result of the F1 event.
Future of International Travel in Malaysia
Deputy Transport Minister Hasbi Habibollah discussed the significance of Gulf Air's return for meeting rising international travel demands. Projections show that passenger traffic across Malaysia is expected to reach between 103.8 million and 109.7 million by 2026.
In 2025, Malaysian airports handled approximately 104.5 million passengers, marking an 11.4% increase year-on-year. KLIA processed about 63.4 million of these travelers.
To enhance the passenger experience and manage the increased volumes, the Malaysian government has initiated investments in airport infrastructure. Upgrades to include modern baggage handling systems, automated immigration gates, and advancements in terminal technology are currently underway at KLIA.
With all preparations in place, the Sepang International Circuit is set to host a spectacular Formula 1 weekend, rekindling the excitement among fans and marking a significant event in Malaysia's sporting calendar.
