New Opportunities in Fiji Rugby

Fiji Rugby is gearing up to name two significant teams aimed at nurturing talent and expanding the sport's reach in the nation. The teams in focus are the Skipper Select for men and the Nasoko team for women.

Skipper Select Team Formation

According to Talemo Waqa, the acting chief operating officer, the selection committee has begun identifying elite players from this year’s provincial competitions to form the Skipper Select team. The goal is to showcase the best talent and prepare them for higher levels of competition.

Introducing the Nasoko Women's Team

The creation of the Nasoko women's development team marks a significant advancement for women's rugby in Fiji. This initiative aims to better equip female athletes for international matches by offering them valuable experience.

The Nasoko team will be established following the conclusion of the Skipper Cup and Marama Championship finals, underscoring Fiji Rugby's commitment to developing women’s sports.

Addressing Preparation Gaps

Waqa highlighted the importance of this initiative, particularly in light of past experiences where the women's team faced challenges due to inadequate preparation. Last year’s matches against teams like the Wallaroos and Samoa showcased the necessity for warm-up games. “We didn’t have any preparation time, and it showed,” Waqa remarked.

Building the Future

The introduction of both teams is anticipated to offer emerging players the chance to compete together, allowing coaches and high-performance staff to assess skills and foster teamwork. This move confirms Fiji Rugby's dedication to creating a robust pathway from provincial play to national representation, with a keen focus on inclusion for women in sports.

As anticipation builds for the selections to be announced after this weekend's finals, both teams represent a crucial step forward for rugby in Fiji.

In conjunction with these developments, the INKK Farebrother Challenge kicks off its first round on Saturday, and fans can tune in for live coverage on Viti+.
