Fiji Latui: A New Era for Rugby Pathways in Fiji
Fiji Rugby Union's CEO highlights the potential of the new Latui team to enhance player development and international exposure.
The Fiji Rugby Union has made a significant move to bolster its rugby framework with the introduction of the Fiji Latui, a new representative team poised to create essential pathways for players. This month, the Latui will embark on their inaugural international journey, competing against a Munster Selection on November 14 and facing Ireland A the following week.
Strengthening Player Development
Koli Sewabu, the CEO of Fiji Rugby Union, emphasized the importance of the Latui in developing local talent and providing them with opportunities to gain invaluable experience against international sides. The newly formed squad consists of 37 players, showcasing talent from Fiji’s Skipper Cup, with ten representatives making the cut.
Highlighted Players
Among the notable names in the squad is Mesake Doge, a prop who was part of Fiji's lineup during the recent Rugby World Cup in France. Doge has previously showcased his skills as a starter in the national team, particularly during challenging matches against England and Scotland.
Vision for the Future
According to Sewabu, the Latui is more than just a team; it symbolizes a strategic initiative aimed at advancing Fiji’s rugby future. He remarked, “This initiative is vital for the development of Fiji Rugby... It provides our players and coaches with more opportunities, while building strong relationships with rugby nations worldwide.”
As the global professional rugby environment evolves, it’s imperative for Fiji to adapt to the increasing competition levels. Sewabu noted the significance of nurturing players and coaches, ensuring they are not only competitive but also capable of excelling on larger stages.
A Modern Approach to Rugby
With the presence of the Fijian Drua in Super Rugby Pacific, the Latui offers another platform for Fijian rugby players to engage with competitive international standards.
