The opening match of the Rugby League World Cup saw the Fiji Bati deliver an impressive performance against the Cook Islands, securing a commanding victory with a score of 40-12.

A Strong Start by Fiji

Fiji kicked off the match at Newcastle with enthusiasm, quickly asserting themselves on the field. Within just six minutes, Solomone Saukuru powered through the Cook Islands' defense to score the first try, following an accurate flat pass from Kurt Donoghoe. Brandon Wakeham added the extra points, placing the Bati ahead 6-0 early in the game.

Building Momentum

As the first half progressed, Fiji continued to dominate. Waqa Blake evaded the Cook Islands' defense, and a perfectly executed high kick from Wakeham was caught by Jacob Saifiti, who also crossed the tryline, extending Fiji’s lead to 12-0.

More points followed as both Taane Milne and Caleb Navale added their names to the score sheet, culminating in a formidable 28-0 lead by halftime. The Cook Islands made some attempts to threaten Fiji’s defense, with Esan Masters orchestrating plays and his teammates fighting for territory. However, they struggled to breach Fiji's solid defensive line.

Cook Islands Fight Back

After the break, the Cook Islands emerged with renewed determination. Just nine minutes into the second half, Kitione Kautoga scored for Fiji, further widening the gap. But the Cook Islands responded with two well-earned tries. Maui Winitana-Patelesio skillfully sidestepped his way to score first, converting his own try to make it 34-6.

Shortly after, Davvy Moale received a short pass, crashing over to score another try for the Cook Islands. Patelesio's successful conversion brought the score to 34-12, igniting hopes of a comeback.

Saukuru's Second Try Seals the Game

However, Fiji’s Saukuru dashed those hopes ten minutes from time. He scored his second try by running onto another pass from Donoghoe, which Wakeham converted, bringing the final score to 40-12.

Despite a late effort by the Cook Islands to push for additional points, Fiji’s defense held strong, denying them any further tries.

Reactions from the Captains

After the match, Fiji captain Api Koroisau expressed pride in his team's performance. He acknowledged the strength of the Cook Islands but emphasized his team's execution of strategy. "We knew what we had to do today and we did that. It was a great effort by the boys. We executed in that first half, and I’m pretty proud of how the boys turned up," he stated.

Koroisau also highlighted the challenge of their upcoming match against defending world champions Australia, admitting it would be a tougher battle.

On the other side, Cook Islands captain KL Iro acknowledged Fiji's superiority on the day, stating, "Fiji were the better team today. They came out harder than we did, unfortunately, that's how rugby league is sometimes." He appreciated the support from their fans and expressed a desire to improve in future matches.

This exciting match sets the tone for the remainder of the tournament, as both teams look ahead to their next challenges in Pool A.
