Wakefield Council has decided to allocate £500,000 to ensure that professional rugby league thrives in Featherstone. This initiative comes in response to recent challenges faced by the Featherstone Rovers, who went into administration last December, prompting the loss of their membership with the Rugby Football League (RFL).

Council Support and Future Plans

During a recent council meeting, cabinet members voted in favor of using the funds to support a proposal by the RFL to purchase the Post Office Road ground. This acquisition aims to secure the location for a new operator moving forward.

Lukasz Borcz, the council's portfolio holder for leisure and sport, emphasized the importance of this plan, saying, "This model protects the assets for future generations and reduces the risk of further loss." The goal is to potentially establish a successor club that could rejoin competitive play by 2027.

Funding Source and Community Benefits

The financial assistance stems from the council's Rugby League Resilience Fund, which was set up in 2021. This fund focuses on cultivating both grassroots initiatives and professional rugby league efforts within the district.

The council is optimistic that the RFL will match their funding, and they are currently engaging in discussions for additional support from national funding bodies. Borcz pointed out that this initiative not only safeguards a crucial community sports asset but also helps preserve avenues for participation and youth development in rugby.

Establishing a Phoenix Club

A report prepared for the cabinet outlined ongoing conversations regarding the potential establishment of a “phoenix club” at the Featherstone stadium. It highlighted the importance of the future management of Featherstone Rovers' assets, which are under the control of an appointed administrator.

The proposal advises that the RFL purchase the stadium and the surrounding land through the RFL Facilities Trust, which would then lease the property to the new club's license holders. This arrangement is designed to protect the assets for future generations, ensuring professional rugby league continues in Featherstone even if the club encounters problems down the line.

Furthermore, the council clarified that the release of funds will be contingent upon the RFL demonstrating that a viable operational entity has been established and meets all necessary criteria.

The RFL has expressed its gratitude toward the council for facilitating this resilience funding. It remains optimistic about their efforts to restore the Featherstone Rovers RLFC to the community, aiming to reignite local support for the sport.
