Get ready for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, where Team GB’s boxing talents will take center stage as they compete in this historic event.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are set to launch on Saturday, October 31, marking a groundbreaking occasion as the first Olympic event to be held on the African continent. Team Great Britain will present 16 talented athletes across seven sports, including three promising boxers: Lily Bassett, Jaya Kalsi, and Michael Maughan.
A Historic Occasion for the Olympics
This year’s Youth Olympic Games will unite young sportspeople aged 14 to 18 from around the globe. The significance of this event cannot be understated, as it reflects the growing commitment of the Olympic movement to include diverse locations for international competitions.
Team GB's Rising Stars
Seventeen-year-old Michael Maughan and 16-year-old Lily Bassett were among the first to be named to Team GB in June. Jaya Kalsi, also 17, rounded out the boxing trio when she was selected earlier this month. All three boxers have honed their skills through the England Performance Pathway and are now primed to showcase their talents on a prestigious stage.
The Road to Competition
Boxing has been a staple of the Summer Youth Olympic Games since the inaugural event in 2010 and continues to thrill audiences with its intense matchups. At Dakar, the boxing tournament will feature 116 competitors from 77 different countries, divided into 57 male and 59 female pugilists vying for medals.
The boxing events will begin on November 7 and culminate with the medal fights on November 12. The boxing categories will include:
- Women's: 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, and 60kg.
- Men's: 50kg, 55kg, 60kg, 65kg, and 70kg.
The Venue and Experience
Competitors will participate in matches at the Dakar Expo Centre, located close to the Olympic Village in Diamniadio. The Village will serve as a hub for athlete interactions, cultural exchanges, and educational programs, providing a rich experience beyond the competition itself.
Operating on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), Dakar’s local time will be convenient for viewers in the UK, ensuring fans can easily keep track of the proceedings.
Looking Ahead at the Competition
As the boxing tournament approaches, the official draw is pending, which will further clarify potential matchups for Team GB's boxers. World Boxing previously released quota allocations, giving an idea of possible opponents but emphasizing that the final brackets will be confirmed only after the draw.
Sharing the Olympic Spirit
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will host around 2,700 young athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees, competing in a wide array of events spanning 35 sports with a total of 153 medal opportunities. Significantly, this event will also mark the debut of the Refugee Youth Olympic Team, symbolizing the Olympic movement’s ongoing dedication to inclusivity.
In terms of gender equality, the Games will feature equal medal events, with 73 available for both men and women, plus seven mixed events. This commitment to fairness is an essential pillar of the Olympic spirit.
As part of the traditional Olympic festivities, the flame was ignited in Athens on September 10, 2023, and arrived in Dakar on September 12, symbolically traveling through all regions of Senegal under the motto "Pass the Energy." The flame will officially light the cauldron during the opening ceremony, ushering in this momentous occasion.
It's an exciting time for England's boxing representatives as they prepare to take on the best in the world while inspiring their fellow countrymen and women.
