The anticipation is building as cricket gears up for its long-awaited return to the Olympics in 2028. According to recent announcements, the cricket qualifiers for the Los Angeles Olympic Games will take place in January and February of that year. This exciting news comes from a release shared in New Delhi on October 23.

Return of Cricket to the Olympics

After a hiatus of over a century, cricket will once again take center stage at the Olympics, showcasing its growth and popularity. The confirmation of the qualifiers is part of a larger global events schedule released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following meetings in Dubai held earlier this month.

ICC Schedule Overview

The ICC's newly released schedule extends well beyond the Olympics, mapping out a series of significant events in the cricketing calendar. Among these, the World Test Championship final is set to occur in England from June 8 to 12, 2029. In total, there are a staggering number of events planned, including 12 men's tournaments, 7 women's competitions, and 5 U-19 events in the period leading up to the 2031 ODI World Cups.

Paths to Qualification

As preparations commence, teams are already positioning themselves for Olympic glory. For the women's event, Australia, India, South Africa, and Great Britain have secured their spots by being the highest-ranked teams from their continents, based on their T20 World Cup performances earlier this year.

On the men's side, the qualification criteria are a bit different. The top four teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania will qualify based on their rankings as of December 31, 2026.

Host Nation Inclusion

The host nation, the USA, has a unique status. The American teams need to finish in the top 15 of the world rankings during the qualifying period from June 30, 2026, to December 31, 2026, to gain entry into either competition. Should they fail to meet these requirements, that spot will be allocated based on the standings from the ICC Women's Champions Trophy 2027, with a cut-off date set for March 1, 2027.

Finalizing the Qualifiers

The qualification events themselves will feature a larger competitive field. Both the men’s and women’s qualifiers will consist of eight teams, with the final compositions determined by international rankings as assessed by the ICC.

This is an exciting period for cricket as it positions itself on a global stage. With several teams already earmarked for participation, the journey towards the Olympic Games promises to be thrilling for players and fans alike.
