Commitment to English Clubs Stands Firm Amid Welsh Aspirations
PREM Rugby and the RFU prioritize the development of English sides over Welsh involvement in top-flight rugby.
Focus on English Teams
In a clear statement, the governing bodies of English rugby have affirmed their commitment to expanding the Premiership (PREM) by adding more English clubs, not reaching across the border for teams from Wales. This firm stance comes in response to recent reports regarding the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) interest in entering a cross-border competition.
Expansion Goals
The PREM aims to increase its number of participating teams from 10 to 12 by the 2029/2030 season. In a joint announcement, PREM Rugby and the Rugby Football Union (RFU) emphasized that their primary commitment lies with fostering growth among English teams throughout the rugby hierarchy. “Currently, our resources are focused on assisting English clubs aspiring to join the league,” they stated.
The responsibility for the league's expansion resides with the Men's Professional Rugby Board (MPRB), which has carefully set forth criteria that any new club must meet in order to gain entry to the competition.
WRU's Position and Future Plans
Despite the assertive position of the English rugby authorities, the WRU is navigating its own challenges, recently reporting an £18.1 million loss for the 2025/26 season. This significant financial setback has prompted the WRU to reevaluate its direction in professional rugby.
In a statement, the WRU confirmed its dedication to supporting four teams in the United Rugby Championship (URC) until the end of the 2027/28 season. While they recognize the extensive appeal of the Premiership, they are also focused on determining a sustainable operational model for Welsh men’s rugby going forward.
The Debate on Cross-Border Competitions
Conversations about potential Anglo-Welsh competitions are frequently stirred among fans in Wales. The WRU acknowledges the allure of participating in English leagues, which is reflected in their proposal for two women's teams, Brython Thunder and Gwalia Lightning, to join the Premiership Women's Rugby competition.
As the WRU continues to assess opportunities for Welsh representation, their commitment to collaborate with stakeholders in the URC remains steadfast. The future of rugby in Wales is under continuous review, with various competition possibilities being considered to ensure the sport remains competitive and thriving.
