Brandon Aiyuk, the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver, has taken a step towards returning to the field, but complications are brewing. Accompanied by his new agent Drew Rosenhaus, Aiyuk visited the 49ers' offices near Levi's Stadium.

This meeting comes nearly 11 months after the team placed him on the reserve/left squad list, and unfortunately, it ended without any resolution.

Ongoing Standoff

The tension between Aiyuk and the team stretches back to October 2024. As a two-time 1,000-yard receiver, Aiyuk is eager to be reinstated so he can be released and explore new opportunities with other teams. However, the NFL may prolong this process even further.

Pending Reinstatement Request

On October 27, Rosenhaus submitted Aiyuk's reinstatement request, but as of now, it remains unapproved by the league—an unusual situation since such matters are typically resolved quickly.

Recent reports from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport suggest that the NFL plans to implement a two-week roster exemption for the 49ers once Aiyuk is reinstated. This development means that even if Aiyuk is given the green light, the team won't be in a hurry to make any roster changes.

"He has not officially been reinstated... There are several issues here," said Rapoport on "The Insiders."

Financial Disputes

Complicating Aiyuk's return even further are the financial disputes that have arisen. Aiyuk received a letter from the NFL indicating he owes the 49ers around $13 million in bonus money from his signing bonus of $23 million from the 2024 season.

In July 2025, the team already voided approximately $27 million in guarantees after Aiyuk failed to attend knee rehabilitation check-ins. This financial disagreement may lead to arbitration, extending the timeline for resolution.

Aiyuk remains optimistic about his health and readiness to play, stating, "I'm feeling great, feeling healthy. It was a long recovery process, but I'm back to 100% and looking to get reinstated to the National Football League."

Future Uncertainties

One thing is clear: even with Aiyuk's eagerness to return, the 49ers' general manager John Lynch hinted that Aiyuk has likely played his last game for the team.

Yet, there are still whispers that the Washington Commanders could be interested in reuniting Aiyuk with his former Arizona State teammate, quarterback Jayden Daniels.

As the situation develops, all eyes will be on whether Aiyuk can navigate through these obstacles and find a path back to the NFL.
