Boxing Icons Gather in Temecula for Unique Event
Join boxing legends Eddie Martinez and Jimmy Gambina in Temecula for an afternoon of art and storytelling.
This Saturday, fans of boxing and art will have a rare chance to meet two legends at Hendo’s Barrel House in Temecula. From 2 to 4 p.m., the event will spotlight Eddie Martinez, a well-respected artist and boxing historian, as he showcases his latest book and shares his unique insights into the sport.
A Celebration of Boxing History
At 91 years old, Eddie Martinez is not only a brilliant artist but also a passionate storyteller. He will discuss his renowned painting, “The Golden Age of Boxing,” which served as inspiration for his new book titled “The Art of the Square Ring: Painting the Golden Age of Boxing.” Originally from Los Angeles, Martinez now resides in Colorado but has strong connections to Southern California through his daughter, Annette Brown, who is the chief marketing officer for Visit Temecula Valley.
Meet the Trainer Behind 'Rocky'
Alongside Martinez will be Jimmy Gambina, the celebrated trainer who guided Sylvester Stallone in his preparation for the legendary film “Rocky.” Not only did Gambina train Stallone, but he also appeared in the film as a character named Mike. His insights into boxing training and Hollywood anecdotes will add an exciting layer to the event.
Engaging with Boxing's Rich Legacy
Rudy Tellez, a significant figure in the local boxing scene and a chairman of the WBC Legends Boxing Museum, will also join the lineup. This event presents an excellent opportunity to engage with prominent figures who have played crucial roles in the boxing community.
“This event is much more than just a book signing,” said Norma Marlowe, public relations director for Visit Temecula Valley. “It offers attendees a chance to interact with a 91-year-old artist who has captured decades of boxing history in his work, hear thrilling stories from someone who trained an icon for a cinematic masterpiece, and connect with a historian dedicated to preserving this sport's legacy.”
Temecula's Boxing Roots
The history of boxing in Temecula dates back nearly a century, when boxing legend Jack Dempsey trained in the region. The location of his training is now part of the Temecula Olive Oil Company, a reminder of the area’s rich history with the sport.
The Pechanga Resort Casino has also been a significant venue for championship boxing since the late 1990s, hosting notable bouts and events featuring legendary fighters like Julio Cesar Chavez. In an earlier fight, both Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran made special appearances, highlighting Temecula's ongoing connection to boxing greatness.
Local historians like Jeffery Harmon have documented many historical tidbits about boxing in the area, including famous matches and notable trainers from the early 20th century.
Personal Connections to Temecula
Martinez has a heartfelt affinity for Temecula, visiting frequently over the years and building a connection with the community. He expressed his excitement about returning, highlighting his love for the area’s history and beauty.
“I first came to Temecula about 60 years ago, and I’ve always found it to be a beautiful place. I’m very much looking forward to being there again,” he shared during a recent conversation.
This gathering promises to blend the worlds of boxing, art, and local history into a memorable afternoon for everyone involved.
