The 2026-2027 Australian Athletics calendar promises thrilling competitions across the nation, featuring top athletes aiming for international events.
Australian Athletics has released its vibrant event schedule for the remaining months of 2026 and the entire 2027 domestic season. This exciting lineup is set to bring together the nation’s elite athletes across various venues in Australia.
Highlights of the Upcoming Season
From the Chemist Warehouse Australian Athletics All Schools Championships happening in Perth this December to the premier Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney slated for April, this calendar serves as a significant platform for elite, emerging, and para-athletes to showcase their talent.
The 2027 season holds special importance as many Australian athletes look ahead to qualify for the World Para Athletics Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in June, followed by the World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, in September.
Reflecting on Last Season
The new calendar follows a spectacular year in the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series, which was filled with remarkable performances and fierce rivalries. Notable moments included an electrifying 200-meter race between Lachlan Kennedy and Gout Gout during the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne, alongside Nina Kennedy's triumphant return to pole vaulting after a year off.
Other standout athletes like Cameron Myers consistently impressed, while Angus Hincksman made headlines by breaking the world record in the T38 1500m at the Australian Athletics Championships.
Building Excitement for the Future
Simon Hollingsworth, CEO of Australian Athletics, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season. He stated, “After such a successful year for our athletes, both in the Chemist Warehouse Summer Series and on the global stage, the excitement is palpable for next year’s events.”
With competitions spread across the nation from Hobart to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane, the calendar is designed to create opportunities for athletes to compete and for fans to connect with the sport. Hollingsworth emphasized the organization’s commitment to advancing both able-bodied and para-athletics.
He noted, “Our sport is experiencing incredible momentum, and this calendar showcases our dedication to providing an accessible and engaging competitive experience for all athletes.”
Major Championship Events
The calendar is filled with a variety of national championships and high-caliber international meets. The Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne stands out as a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event, supplemented by Bronze meetings in Adelaide, Sydney, and Hobart.
The Australian Athletics Championships are poised to be a highlight of the domestic season, offering athletes vital opportunities to gauge their readiness as they aim for international selection.
2027 will also mark the beginning of a seven-year broadcasting partnership with the 9Network, enhancing how fans experience the sport through various media channels. Details on talent for the commentary team will be announced shortly.
