Brendon McCullum said he would welcome the chance to continue as England head coach after the team’s T20 World Cup exit, describing the defeat as deeply disappointing but stopping short of any definitive decision on his future.
McCullum reflected on a winter that mixed encouraging signs in the Test arena with underwhelming results in white-ball cricket. He acknowledged the high expectations that surrounded the shorter-format campaign and the intensity of a busy Test programme, and praised the players for their commitment and effort throughout.
“I would love to stay on,” McCullum said, while also stressing that any coaching appointments and the next steps are for the England and Wales Cricket Board to decide. He added that he and his staff will respect the ECB’s process.
The coach said the squad and support staff have already begun internal reviews that will feed into any formal ECB assessment. He emphasised the intention to learn from the tournament, rebuild where necessary and protect a team culture that encourages aggressive, bold cricket.
McCullum expressed optimism about the talent in the squad and the potential to regroup ahead of future international commitments. While the World Cup exit raises immediate questions about direction and selection, his clear desire to remain provides the board with the option of continuity if it chooses to retain him.
The coming weeks, McCullum added, will show whether his wishes and the ECB’s plans align as formal reviews and decisions take place.
