Jim Lenihan has been appointed head coach of the Huddersfield Giants as the club looks to arrest a difficult start to the Super League season. Huddersfield sit bottom of the table after losing their first five league matches; Luke Robinson was sacked on March 22 following that run.
The club said it wanted someone to help build a long-term foundation looking towards 2030 and beyond, and Lenihan was handed a long-term contract because of his stated vision for the side.
Lenihan is no stranger to Huddersfield: he made 21 appearances for the club as a player during the 1999 season. More recently he coached the Brisbane Tigers in Australia and spent six years as an assistant coach at NRL side Gold Coast Titans (2019–2025), including a spell as interim head coach in 2023.
On taking the role, Lenihan made clear his priorities. His immediate focus is establishing a clear identity for the team and recruiting players who fit that identity. “We want to be unapologetically a side that Huddersfield can have pride in,” he said, stressing the importance of reflecting the area’s hard-working, proud character.
Lenihan said change will not happen overnight but that defining who the club is and how it wants to play is the first step. He also emphasised that every player will be given a fresh start under his leadership. “I have got to come in here and earn everyone’s trust. I’ve got to earn everyone’s respect. And a part of that is coming in and having everyone have a fresh slate,” he said. “There are no black marks against anyone’s name under my way of thinking. You are given that respect and it is your actions after that that keep it at that point or slowly erode it.”
Recruitment will be an ongoing, daily process as Lenihan looks to bring in people who fit the club’s desired identity, but he indicated there will also be time for current players to change perceptions and win their place in the team.
Practical challenges remain: improving results, rebuilding confidence, and winning back supporters. Lenihan’s brief is to set a clear direction and create a culture Huddersfield can be proud of, with the long-term aim of stabilising and advancing the club’s fortunes.
