Huddersfield Giants came from behind twice to beat Hull FC 22-16 at the Accu Stadium, recording back-to-back Betfred Super League victories for the first time this season. The result leaves Huddersfield bottom of the table but just two points adrift of Hull following a tight, physical contest.
Huddersfield opened the scoring after being awarded a fresh set of six around 40 metres out. Harry Rushton’s inside ball found Chris Patolo, who reached out to touch down; George Flanagan converted to make it 6-0. Hull hit back midway through the first half when Jake Arthur’s short pass released Joe Batchelor to race away and score.
Six minutes later Hull took the lead courtesy of a break from Cade Cust. He finished in the corner with support from Ethan O’Neill and Davy Litten, although Zak Hardaker was unable to add the conversion. Huddersfield thought they had a late first-half try when Jacob Gagai went over in the corner, but the score was ruled out after a video review.
The hosts started the second half strongly. Tui Lolohea’s kick forced a Hull knock-on and Connor Wrench chased through to regather and score under the posts. Hull responded when O’Neill broke clear and supplied Litten, who finished to make it 16-12.
Huddersfield hit back again as Lewis Jagger dived over to level the scores. After Hull were penalised for a high tackle, George Flanagan went over behind the posts for the match-winning try, and his conversion put the result beyond doubt.
Head coach Jim Lenihan praised the character of his side, saying the win was the reward for hard work in training and gave the squad renewed belief. “It was nice to have a bit of belief at the back end of the game and find a way to win instead of lose,” he told Sky Sports. “This is a very proud club that works hard behind the scenes.”
