Manchester United moved up to sixth in the Premier League with a convincing 4-1 victory over bottom club Wolves at Molineux.
Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring before Jean-Ricner Bellegarde levelled for Wolves just before half-time. United regained control after the break as Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount and Fernandes — from the penalty spot — extended the lead and wrapped up the win against a struggling Wolves side.
The result took Ruben Amorim’s team into the top six after back-to-back Premier League away wins for the first time under his stewardship. For Wolves, new head coach Rob Edwards remains without a point from four games; the club sit at the foot of the table, 13 points adrift of safety.
Many supporters missed the opening 15 minutes due to protests over club ownership, but the stoppage did little to change the match flow: United dominated early. Diogo Dalot and Matheus Cunha both threatened and Sam Johnstone made a smart save from Mbeumo, before Casemiro won possession high up and the move was finished by Fernandes, who slipped the ball past Johnstone after a tumbling finish to make it 1-0.
Wolves had a response when Toti Gomes cleared Cunha’s effort off the line, then levelled shortly before the break. Ki-Jana Hoever’s cross found David Moller Wolfe, who set up Bellegarde to finish neatly. Bellegarde was arguably Wolves’ best player before being forced off injured, and his goal was the first of Edwards’ brief tenure.
The second half was controlled by United. Dalot powered down the left and delivered for Mbeumo to slot home and restore the lead. A threaded pass from Fernandes created space for Mount, who produced a superb volley to make it 3-1. A handball by Yerson Mosquera led to a penalty, which Fernandes calmly converted to complete his brace.
United finished with 27 shots — their most in a Premier League match under Amorim — and were clearly the better side across the 90 minutes. The performance underscored the team’s improved chance creation compared with last season, a point Amorim highlighted after the game.
Team news saw Ladislav Krejci return for Wolves and Ki-Jana Hoever start at right wing-back. Amorim made one change from the side that drew with West Ham, introducing Mason Mount for Joshua Zirkzee; youngster Ayden Heaven retained his place.
Fernandes was named Player of the Match after two goals and the assist for Mount’s strike. His recent form against teams in relegation danger has been prolific — he has 15 goal involvements in his last 14 Premier League appearances against sides starting the day in the bottom three.
After the match, Mount praised the team’s combinations and said they know what they can achieve when forward play is sharp. Amorim reflected that while his side created plenty of opportunities and took more shots than last season, the crucial factor was converting chances into goals and maintaining consistent attacking threat.
Rob Edwards acknowledged supporters’ frustration and the need to rebuild confidence. “I get the anger and the frustration completely,” he said. “If I was a supporter I’d be angry myself because we all want to see our team competing, and at the moment, we aren’t doing that.”
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher warned that Wolves must improve quickly to avoid relegation. Wolves matched their longest-ever league losing run with eight successive defeats, and their two points from 15 matches is the joint-lowest return after 15 games in the history of the top four tiers.
United’s win provides a timely boost in their push for a top-six finish, while Wolves face a growing crisis on and off the pitch as December progresses.
