County cricket returns with seven Division One rounds to be completed before Ben Stokes names his England XI for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s in June. Those early fixtures can throw up new international candidates, but the overriding prize for the 10 top-tier counties is the Lord’s Taverners Trophy in late September.
Title contenders
Nottinghamshire and Surrey look set to dominate conversations all season. Reigning champions Nottinghamshire benefit from Ben Duckett shelving IPL plans to focus on form for England, while captain Haseeb Hameed’s runs and leadership remain central. The addition of overseas quick Fergus O’Neill and a seam unit featuring Olly Stone and Josh Tongue gives balance across conditions.
Surrey will be determined to respond after a disappointing campaign. Ollie Pope will be motivated to push back into England calculations and a bolstered pace attack, including returns such as Sean Abbott and Gus Atkinson, should strengthen their hopes. On balance, expect a tight fight; prediction: Surrey to just edge out the rest and reclaim the title.
Somerset should also be in the mix. Opener and off-spinner Archie Vaughan arrives with confidence after a productive winter in Australia. James Rew’s new contract and the potential of his brother Thomas Rew provide depth and a possible route to England contention, making Somerset a genuine title threat.
The chasing pack
Beyond the top three, margins look fine and form will be decisive. Essex will aim to remedy a sluggish opening last season. Sam Cook remains an asset for Test consideration; recruits Mitchell Killeen and Zaman Akhter add seam depth, while early-season overseas signing Wiaan Mulder and the experience of Simon Harmer bolster their attack. Jordan Cox, when released from franchise duties, is a wildcard who could push for national recognition as a keeper-batter.
Hampshire, who narrowly avoided relegation last year, remain dangerous. They have aggressive batting and the all-round value of Liam Dawson. Overseas plans altered after unsuccessful approaches for Michael Neser and Jayden Seales; Codi Yusuf will be available early, and young quick Sonny Baker is one to monitor for England’s future.
Warwickshire have been through a sudden captaincy change with Ed Barnard replacing Alex Davies, but the availability of Chris Woakes for the full season—now he’s stepped away from international duty—gives them control and experience.
The rest
Glamorgan return to Division One for the first time since 2005 with momentum. Jersey-born Asa Tribe impressed for the Lions and in SA20 and could emerge as an England contender if he sustains runs; Sean Dickson and Colin Ingram bring experience to steady the side.
Leicestershire are back in the top tier after a long absence. Rehan Ahmed, who was influential in promotion with both bat and ball, will be pivotal again as he balances county and England prospects. The Foxes have added experience in Stevie Eskinazi and Josh Davey and signed Jake Weatherald for the early block; Ajaz Patel’s season-long spin presence should help them grind out results.
Relegation concerns
Yorkshire must replace the experience of Dawid Malan and Jordan Thompson and will lean on overseas quicks Jhye Richardson and Will Sutherland staying fit and effective. Availability of Harry Brook and Joe Root early in the season would transform their prospects.
Sussex start with a significant handicap: a 12-point deduction after ECB sanctions over winter financial issues. That penalty compounds uncertainty around a young squad that finished fourth last year, and potential England call-ups for James Coles could further restrict selection. Captain Ollie Robinson will need to galvanise the side in a survival fight.
