Formula 1 returns after a five-week break with a Sprint weekend in Miami as the 2026 season resumes. Kimi Antonelli leads the Drivers’ Championship after back-to-back wins in China and Japan, nine points ahead of Mercedes team-mate George Russell. Mercedes have won each of the opening three races, but regulation tweaks and widespread upgrades brought to Miami mean the pecking order could shift.
Ferrari and McLaren aim to close the gap to Mercedes; Lando Norris returns to the circuit where he took his maiden Grand Prix win in 2024. Oscar Piastri nearly ended Mercedes’ winning streak in Japan but was hampered by the timing of a Safety Car, while fast-starting Ferraris should be contenders for podium finishes. Max Verstappen sits ninth in the standings and has recently spoken about considering his future in F1, so attention will be on his reaction to changes in power unit regulations.
Miami International Autodrome
Miami joined the F1 calendar in 2022. The layout offers multiple overtaking opportunities, especially at the end of long straights into Turn 11 and Turn 17. As a street circuit, the walls are close and mistakes are costly — precision against the barriers is essential.
Weather forecast
Currently, Saturday is expected to be dry and hot with air temperatures around 30C. Thunderstorms are forecast for Sunday, with a high chance of rain that could impact the Grand Prix.
Weekend format
As a Sprint event, there is only one practice session before Sprint Qualifying on Friday night, followed by the Sprint and the Grand Prix over the weekend.
