Peterborough continued their revival under manager Luke Williams with a 3-0 home victory over Stockport, a result that ended the Hatters’ run at the top of League One. Posh have now won all four matches since Williams took charge and sit just one point from safety, while Lincoln replace Stockport at the summit.
The hosts took an early lead after five minutes. A cross from Peter Kioso found Harry Leonard, who fed Ben Woods; Woods stroked home to score his first goal for the club. Peterborough were largely the better side and doubled their advantage on 37 minutes when Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s effort was parried by goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe, only for Kyrell Lisbie to slot in the rebound.
The game was settled in the 76th minute when Brandon Khela finished powerfully into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Peterborough nearly added another when Declan Frith had a low effort kept out by Hinchliffe’s foot, and in stoppage time Jayden Fevrier’s attempt was denied by Alex Bass.
Manager reaction
Luke Williams praised his players’ commitment and the supporters who braved the cold, saying that the team’s approach — being tough defensively, protecting their own box and looking to create chances at the other end — is winning backing from fans. He stressed that while possession and the style between the boxes will develop, the immediate focus is on defensive solidity and attacking decisively.
Stockport boss Dave Challinor was critical of the goals his side conceded, calling the manner of them unacceptable. He felt Stockport started reasonably but repeatedly turned the ball over and failed to defend well in moments one-on-one. Challinor also suggested there could be a debate about whether the second goal involved an offside, but said regardless the team did not do enough and, having failed to reduce the deficit, the match opened up late on.
Peterborough’s win adds momentum to Williams’s tenure and gives the club hope of climbing clear of danger, while Stockport must regroup after losing top spot and address the lapses that cost them the match.
