Fabio Wardley’s camp say they were disappointed by the officiating in Saturday’s WBO world heavyweight title fight against Daniel Dubois in Manchester.
Wardley twice floored Dubois in the early rounds but was ultimately stopped in the 11th round, suffering the first defeat of his professional career. His team point to extensive facial damage and believe much of it resulted from repeated illegal blows, including multiple head-butts, and say referee Howard Foster should have taken stronger action.
They also want an explanation for a break in the action late in the seventh round, moments after Wardley appeared to have hurt Dubois. Sky Sports has contacted the British Boxing Board of Control for a response.
Promoter Frank Warren confirmed a rematch clause was included in the contract, meaning Wardley could seek an immediate return bout. Warren said the decision would be for the fighters, and that he hopes both men take time to rest and recover before considering next steps.
After the fight, Dubois paid tribute to Wardley’s performance, describing the contest as a hard-fought battle. Wardley’s corner have defended choices made during the contest and are now weighing their options, including whether to activate the rematch clause.
