Chelsea have confirmed Sonia Bompastor has signed a new contract that keeps her as head coach until 2030. The extension comes even as the club appears unlikely to reclaim the Women’s Super League crown this season; after a 5-1 defeat by Manchester City, Chelsea sit 12 points adrift of the leaders with eight matches remaining. Bompastor had suggested after that loss she would step aside if the board judged she was not the right person for the role, but the club’s directors have instead publicly backed her. Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstantley said renewing her contract demonstrates their faith in her leadership, vision and the stability she brings, adding there is still plenty to play for as Chelsea continue to contest major trophies. Bompastor said she feels supported by the club despite the league setback, noting a language issue led her to phrase comments after the City game poorly. ‘I still feel the support of the club,’ she said, adding the backing for the women’s team, the players and herself has been ‘unbelievable.’ Sky Sports analyst Sam Blitz pointed out Chelsea have suffered consecutive league defeats for the first time in 11 years, and this is the first run of back-to-back losses in nearly 200 matches of Bompastor’s managerial career. The board’s decision to stand by her could galvanise the squad: Chelsea still face Manchester United in both the FA Cup fifth round and the League Cup final, and they begin the Champions League quarter-finals at the end of March. A first Champions League triumph would significantly reframe the season, and the contract extension signals to rivals that Chelsea remain committed to Bompastor’s long-term project.
