Jon Rahm closed with a seven-under 64 on Sunday to win LIV Golf Mexico City by six shots, marking his second victory this season on the Saudi-funded circuit.
The week was clouded by questions about LIV’s finances. CEO Scott O’Neil sent staff a memo saying the league was assured of funding through the end of the year amid reports the Saudi Public Investment Fund might withdraw its support. A two-hour power outage on Tuesday that cut the live stream fueled further speculation, though LIV did confirm it will return to Chapultepec Golf Club next year.
Rahm, who went a season on LIV without a victory but won the points title, birdied the reachable par-4 second and holed out for eagle at the next hole en route to a bogey-free round. After the win he reflected on his turnaround, saying, “If you would have told me last week on Thursday afternoon that I’d be winning by a six-shot margin this week, I would not have believed you because of how bad I played,” following a tie for 38th at the Masters.
Bryson DeChambeau withdrew before the final round, citing wrist discomfort he did not want to aggravate. Chasing a third consecutive LIV win, DeChambeau was 16 shots off the lead when he stopped; he said he will be evaluated and hopes to play LIV Golf Virginia on May 7-10 as preparation for the PGA Championship.
Legion XIII, Rahm’s team, earned its first team victory of the year. David Puig carded a 66 to finish second and picked up valuable world ranking points that all but secure his place in the PGA Championship; another strong result in Virginia could lock in a U.S. Open spot.
The next LIV Golf League event is scheduled for May 7-10 at Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C.
