Oscar Piastri took Sprint pole for the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail, edging Mercedes’ George Russell by just 0.032 seconds. Piastri produced a confident one-lap performance after topping Friday practice, finally reversing a run of qualifying form that had seen team-mate Lando Norris beat him over a single lap on six straight occasions. ‘It has been a good day,’ Piastri said, crediting the team and noting there are still small things to tidy up.
Norris, the championship leader, was third after a mistake on his second flying lap in SQ3. He arrives at the penultimate weekend 24 points clear of both Piastri and Max Verstappen, and can seal the title on Sunday if he extends his lead to at least 26 points. Norris admitted to a late error in qualifying and, after a brief heated exchange with his engineer over pit-lane timing and letting Alex Albon through before a final attempt, said he will still try for the win despite expecting overtaking to be difficult: ‘I would be stupid not to try and win but it is impossible to overtake so I think I will probably finish P3.’
Verstappen struggled all day with balance issues and a bouncing car. He aborted his first SQ3 flying lap after running off track and could only manage sixth, beaten by team-mate Yuki Tsunoda for the first time this season. Verstappen reported severe bouncing and a mix of aggressive understeer that flipped into oversteer at high speed; small wheel adjustments didn’t solve the problem and he warned the race could be about managing the car rather than attacking.
Lewis Hamilton’s difficult start to life at Ferrari continued: he was knocked out in SQ1 and will start 18th, again lacking the pace shown by his rivals and terse after the session.
