Max Ojomoh produced a match-defining performance in his first home start as England survived a late Argentina surge to seal a 27-23 win at Twickenham, completing a 4-from-4 Autumn Nations Series sweep.
The 25-year-old Bath centre opened the scoring with an early intercept try and played a key role in both of England’s other tries, laying on Immanuel Feyi-Waboso’s opener and creating the platform for Henry Slade’s late score. George Ford added a ninth-minute drop-goal, three conversions and a late penalty as England built a 17-0 lead that was cut to 17-16 early in the second half before Slade’s try and Ford’s penalty steadied the hosts.
Argentina hit back after the break through Justo Piccardo, who produced a spectacular solo effort five minutes into the second half, then relied on accurate kicking from Tomas Albornoz and Santiago Carreras to turn the game into a tight contest. Carreras’ boot briefly put the Pumas ahead on the scoreboard at 17-16, but England regrouped and regained control.
Key moments came early for England: Ford’s drop-goal set the tone and, a minute later, Ojomoh intercepted a loose pass and raced in. His cross-field kick before half-time created Feyi-Waboso’s try, while Albornoz’s long-range penalty on the stroke of half-time gave Argentina a foothold.
The second half was tense. After Piccardo’s try and two successful penalties, Argentina pressed for a lead, but England’s defence, a crucial scrum penalty and determined stands kept them in it. Ojomoh’s involvement in the build-up to a lineout move led to Slade’s try with 14 minutes to play; Ford’s conversion and a subsequent penalty extended the lead to 27-16. Rodrigo Isgro’s late score and Carreras’ conversion trimmed the gap to four, but Argentina lost possession from a decisive injury-time five-metre lineout, allowing England to see out the victory.
The match featured several dramatic incidents: Tom Curry was penalised for a late hit amid a mid-game confrontation; Joaquin Oviedo had a late score disallowed; Alex Coles received a yellow card; and Argentina finished strongly but ultimately wasted the final attacking platform.
Ojomoh, voted player of the match, said he had been waiting for the chance to make an impact and praised the support around him, calling the night ‘class’. Prop Ellis Genge described an anxious finish but hailed the achievement of four straight autumn wins, noting the rarity of that form and his pride in the group.
Scoring summary: England tries from Ojomoh (10), Feyi-Waboso (25) and Slade (66); Ford added a drop-goal (9), three conversions and a late penalty. Argentina replied with tries from Piccardo (45) and Isgro (80), and points from penalties and conversions by Albornoz and Carreras.
What’s next: England’s autumn sweep — victories over Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Argentina — sets up their next fixture at home to Wales in Round 1 of the 2026 Six Nations on Saturday, 7 February (4.40pm). Argentina finish their season and are next scheduled to return in July 2026 to host Scotland as part of rugby’s new Nations Championship.
