Former world darts champion and Sky Sports pundit Mark Webster has revealed he was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer. Webster, who won the BDO World Championship during his playing career, told Darts World’s YouTube channel that he received a diagnosis of hairy cell leukaemia in January and began chemotherapy in February.
He said he has not worked at a darts event since starting treatment. Webster stressed that, while the word “leukaemia” sounds alarming, the outlook is generally positive: around 95 percent of cases respond well and many patients are brought into remission. However, his recovery has been slower than expected.
Webster explained his white blood cell counts have remained low, leaving his immune system weakened and preventing him from returning to work. He last worked at the Premier League in Newcastle on February 5 and recently considered covering the Brighton event, but his blood counts made it unsafe.
He praised his medical team and said he must rely on their advice, even when it is frustrating not to have all the answers. Personally he feels fine and remains optimistic about returning when it is safe. For now, Webster says he is following medical guidance, staying patient, and hoping his recovery continues to progress.
