Matt Fitzpatrick hopes to turn the disappointment of last week’s near-miss at The Players into fuel for a final-day charge at the Valspar Championship. Fitzpatrick had held a one-shot lead into the penultimate hole at TPC Sawgrass, but a par-bogey finish allowed Cam Young to close with birdie-par and win by a stroke.
At Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club Fitzpatrick and countryman Marco Penge sit three shots back of leader Sungjae Im going into Sunday’s final round. Both Fitzpatrick and Penge carded third-round 68s to move to eight under. Americans Brandt Snedeker and David Lipsky share second at nine under, while Im leads at 11 under after an opening 64 followed by consecutive 69s.
Fitzpatrick said the experience at Sawgrass is still on his mind and that he is trying to draw on those lessons this week, emphasizing the need for patience and for using past pressure-filled moments to his advantage. He also described the Valspar as an important event in the build-up to the Masters and said a victory here would be a strong start to the season.
