British hopes at the Miami Open ended on Saturday when Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter and Fran Jones were all eliminated in Florida.
Boulter fell in the third round, losing in straight sets to 13th seed Karolina Muchova, 6-3, 7-5. Norrie, seeded 23rd and receiving a first-round bye, was beaten in the second round by American Alex Michelsen 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-4. Michelsen secured the opening set by breaking Norrie’s serve in the 12th game; Norrie recovered from 3-0 down in the second to force a tie-break, but Michelsen claimed a decisive break in the third to reach the last 16.
Fran Jones withdrew through illness partway through her second-round match against fifth seed Jessica Pegula. Jones, who said she had felt unwell even during her opening win over Venus Williams, lost the first set 6-1 and retired while 3-0 down in the second.
There were several notable results elsewhere in the men’s draw. Second seed Jannik Sinner, the 2024 Miami champion, beat Damir Dzumhur 6-3, 6-3 as he chases the Sunshine Double after winning Indian Wells. World No. 3 Alexander Zverev defeated wildcard Martin Damm 6-2, 6-4 and will face Marin Cilic next. Alexander Shevchenko upset eighth seed Ben Shelton in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, while Frances Tiafoe advanced with a straight-sets win over Arthur Cazaux.
Former champion Daniil Medvedev recovered from a first-set tie-break loss to beat Rei Sakamoto 6-7(10-12), 6-3, 6-1. Alejandro Tabilo rallied to defeat Andrey Rublev 6-7(5-7), 6-2, 6-4. And 21st seed Jiri Lehecka ended 17-year-old Moise Kouame’s run with a 6-2, 7-5 win; Kouame had become the youngest Masters 1000 match winner since Rafael Nadal in 2003 after his first-round shock of Zachary Svajda.
On the women’s side, fourth seed Coco Gauff recovered from a first-set loss to beat Alycia Parks 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Amanda Anisimova defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4, 6-2, and Victoria Mboko edged Anastasia Zakharova 6-1, 7-5.
