Andres Cortes and Mark Magsayo both turned in statement wins at Zuffa Boxing 05 in Las Vegas, keeping the possibility of a lightweight meeting very much alive.
Cortes, fighting in his hometown, extended his unbeaten run to 25-0 with a commanding 10-round decision over Dominican contender Eridson Garcia in the main event. Cortes controlled the early rounds with a steady jab and crisp two- to three-punch sequences, then shifted gears in the middle rounds, cutting distance to work effectively inside with body and head shots. Garcia was repeatedly penalised for holding and had a point deducted in Round 4, which hindered any attempt to change the fight’s tempo. Cortes handled the closing rounds comfortably to secure a clear victory and further cement his status in the Zuffa Boxing lightweight ranks.
In the co-main, former featherweight world champion Mark Magsayo made an emphatic statement in his lightweight debut, stopping Ireland’s Feargal McCrory 21 seconds into the fifth round. Backed by a loud Filipino contingent at the Meta APEX, Magsayo landed heavy right hands from the opening bell and kept McCrory on the defensive through rounds two to four, nearly finishing him late in the fourth. With the Irish fighter’s corner concerned about continued punishment, head coach Colin Morgan halted the contest early in the fifth after another succession of power shots. The stoppage marked a potent first outing for Magsayo under the Zuffa banner and underscored his threat at 135 pounds.
The card also produced an upset as Tony Hirsch Jr handed Robert Meriwether III his first professional loss via split decision in a lightweight bout. Featherweight Alexis De la Cerda delivered one of the night’s most dramatic moments, scoring a brutal one-punch knockout with a short right hook that sent Ervin Fuller III out late in the third — an early candidate for knockout of the year.
With Cortes remaining unbeaten and Magsayo proving dangerous at the new weight, both fighters have strengthened their claims as contenders as the Zuffa Boxing lightweight division continues to take shape.
