Arsenal maintained a perfect Champions League record with a 3-0 victory over Club Brugge, thanks to two spectacular finishes from Noni Madueke and a brilliant strike from Gabriel Martinelli.
The win moves Mikel Arteta’s team three points clear of Bayern Munich at the top of the group with two matches left, effectively securing their place in the last 16.
After a slow opening period in Belgium, Arsenal took the lead when Madueke collected the ball near halfway, drove forward and unleashed a powerful shot from outside the area that cannoned in off the underside of the crossbar. He later added a second with a headed finish to make it 2-0. Martinelli’s goal was a piece of individual quality: he cut inside and curled a superb effort into the net. Gabriel Jesus, making his first appearance since January following a 342-day layoff with an ACL injury, came close to a late fourth when his effort struck the crossbar.
Brugge had periods where they tested Arsenal’s makeshift back line. Injuries forced Arteta to deploy midfielder Christian Nørgaard at centre-back alongside Piero Hincapié, and Brugge created chances before Arsenal ultimately pulled away.
Team news and tactics
– Arteta made five changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Aston Villa: Christian Nørgaard, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke came into the XI, replacing Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori.
– Jurrien Timber was left out of the match-day squad. Nørgaard started at centre-back with Timber, Gabriel, William Saliba and Cristhian Mosquera all unavailable.
David Raya recorded his fifth clean sheet in this season’s competition, producing seven saves on the night after facing just nine shots on target across the previous five games combined. Arteta was able to rotate his squad, introducing Saka and Calafiori late on as attention shifts back to the Premier League visit to Wolverhampton on Saturday.
