Harry Byrne’s accurate goal-kicking proved the difference as Leinster fought back to beat Leicester 23-15 in the Investec Champions Cup at Welford Road. Both sides crossed for two tries, but Byrne’s penalties and composed game management — plus a late touchline conversion from the replacement — gave the visitors the edge. Leicester remain without a point from their opening two European fixtures.
Leinster had tries from scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park and hooker Dan Sheehan. Leicester’s scores came from wings Adam Radwan and Ollie Hassell-Collins, while Billy Searle contributed with points from the tee.
An early rehearsed line-out move appeared to have put Leinster ahead when Tommy O’Brien dove over following a knock-down by Robbie Henshaw, but the TMO ruled Henshaw was offside at the start of the move and the score was disallowed. Leinster then dominated territory and Byrne slotted an early penalty, only for Searle to peg them back soon after.
Radwan produced a highlight for the Tigers shortly after, gathering a loose ball in Leinster’s 22 and twice hack-kicking along the right touchline before grounding it for the game’s opening try. Byrne replied with another penalty, but Leicester struck again on the stroke of half-time when Hassell-Collins finished off a well-placed cross-field kick, leaving the hosts 15-6 up at the break.
The second half began with Searle missing a long-range penalty that might have put Leicester further clear. Leinster then seized a momentum swing when Leicester lost control at a scrum in their 22; Gibson-Park pounced on the loose ball and powered through to score, bringing the visitors back into contention. Repeated infringements from Leicester allowed Byrne to kick his third penalty and put Leinster ahead as the match moved into the final quarter.
Byrne was replaced late in the game by Sam Prendergast, who arrived in time to convert Sheehan’s try after a dominant line-out drive, sealing the win for Leinster. Despite some errors, Leinster’s discipline, kicking and composure under pressure proved decisive as they took the crucial two try-scoring points on the road.
