Sky Sports F1 pundit Martin Brundle says George Russell is ready to mount a genuine challenge for his first world championship in 2026.
With the season-opening Australian Grand Prix imminent and Mercedes showing promise in pre-season with the new W17, Russell remains among the bookmakers’ favourites. Brundle says winter testing has not produced a single dominant contender, but believes Russell will be in the mix if the car performs as expected.
Brundle outlined why he rates the 28-year-old: Russell is experienced, technically strong and now has the clear leadership role within Mercedes. After years at Williams and then joining Mercedes during a less dominant period, Russell has done the hard work to develop racecraft and team respect. That background, Brundle says, means Russell has the temperament and car control to handle what promises to be a changeable season.
On team dynamics, Brundle expects Kimi Antonelli to come on strongly in his second year, but thinks Russell has the confidence to win races and, if the package allows, a championship. Brundle drew parallels with last season, when drivers such as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri stood up to pressure from Max Verstappen, suggesting Russell is in similarly good form mentally.
Recalling Russell’s past rivalry with Lewis Hamilton, Brundle argued the younger driver has already shown he can cope with intra-team pressure, and that his experience — despite being under 30 — should prevent distractions if he has a title-winning car.
Assessing the wider field, Brundle expects an open fight among a ‘big four’ after the three winter tests: Ferrari and both its drivers look strong; McLaren and its drivers appear competitive, with Oscar motivated after last year and Lando comfortable; and Red Bull remains a potent threat thanks to Max Verstappen’s exceptional car control. In short, Brundle does not see a clear favourite for 2026.
