Chelsea sank to a new low as they were beaten 3-0 by Brighton at the Amex, extending their Premier League goal drought to five matches — their worst barren spell since 1912. The loss left Chelsea below Brighton in sixth, with four league games remaining, and intensified calls from travelling supporters for head coach Liam Rosenior to be sacked.
Ferdi Kadioglu fired Brighton ahead after just three minutes. Pascal Gross’ corner was flicked on at the near post by Jorrel Hato and the ball was eventually side-footed in by Kadioglu via a deflection off Wesley Fofana. Brighton dominated the encounter thereafter, probing consistently while Chelsea rarely threatened.
Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez almost made things worse with a risky pass that presented Jack Hinshelwood with a chance, only for Trevoh Chalobah to make a goal-line clearance. Chelsea did not register a meaningful shot until the 43rd minute and surprisingly took 32 minutes to make their first tackle — symptoms of a side second best across the pitch.
A slip by Moises Caicedo allowed Georginio Rutter to feed Hinshelwood for Brighton’s second, and substitute Danny Welbeck wrapped up the win in stoppage time, converting a low cross from Maxim De Cuyper. The trio of Kadioglu, Hinshelwood and Welbeck were Brighton’s goalscorers on the night.
The defeat stung given Chelsea’s recent heavy spending and their ongoing struggles at the Amex. Brighton fans also jeered former Seagulls players Moises Caicedo, Marc Cucurella and Sanchez during the match. Notably absent from Chelsea’s lineup were Cole Palmer and top scorer Joao Pedro.
Selected player ratings reflected the gulf in performance: Brighton’s Verbruggen, Van Hecke, Kadioglu, Hinshelwood and Mitoma all earned high marks (around 8), with Hinshelwood named Player of the Match. Chelsea’s ratings were lower — Sanchez and Fofana around 5, Chalobah 6, Cucurella 6, Caicedo and Lavia 5, and Delap 6.
After the game Rosenior described the performance as unacceptable, acknowledging he could not defend large parts of the display and saying drastic change was needed immediately. He stressed personal accountability and warned that the attitude and determination from several starters fell below the club’s standards.
Former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill told Sky Sports there were “no positives” to take, calling the side fragile and low on confidence. With the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds at Wembley on the horizon, Sunday’s match now takes on extra significance as Chelsea try to halt a worrying run and rebuild belief, while Brighton press on in their bid for European qualification.
